Building a custom GPT takes five moves inside ChatGPT, no code required. Go to chatgpt.com, click GPTs to land in the GPT Store, then click Create. Describe the assistant you want and ChatGPT builds it, name and picture included. Tighten the instructions, knowledge files and capabilities in the Configure tab, test it in Preview, then publish and share the link. That is the route AI Central lays out in How to Create Custom GPT On ChatGPT.

Reviewed in August 2026. What follows tracks AI Central's How to Create Custom GPT On ChatGPT, a five stage walkthrough of the build flow as it stands inside the product.

Why bother building one at all

Anyone who uses ChatGPT seriously ends up with a private ritual. A block of setup text pasted at the top of every session. Role, tone, rules, the same file referenced for the fourth time this week.

It works. It is also a tax paid over and over.

A custom GPT is that ritual made permanent. ChatGPT's own description of the feature, captured in AI Central's tour of the GPT Store, states the ambition plainly.

Discover and create custom versions of ChatGPT that combine instructions, extra knowledge, and any combination of skills.

Three separate things are being bundled in that sentence, and the distinction is the whole reason the feature is worth the effort. Instructions are standing orders. Extra knowledge is your material, uploaded once and available every time. Skills are the capabilities the assistant is permitted to use. AI Central's five stages are essentially a tour of those three levers, plus a test step and a publish step.

Stage one, find the door

AI Central's opening instruction is the least glamorous one and the one people most often fumble. Go to chatgpt.com, click GPTs. That drops you into the GPT Store, which is simultaneously a gallery of other people's builds and the entrance to your own.

The store is sorted by category, and the list AI Central records is a decent map of what people actually build with this: Top Picks, Writing, Productivity, Research and Analysis, Education, Lifestyle, DALL-E and Programming. The featured shelf in the capture, presented as curated top picks from that week, carried Write For Me, billed as a supercharged writing assistant, Scholar GPT, which advertises research across more than 200 million resources with built in critical reading skills, Consensus, which points at the world's scientific literature, and AI PDF Drive, aimed at legal and professional documents.

Spend a few minutes on that shelf before you build anything. It is the cheapest way to find out whether the assistant you have in mind already exists, and where the gap is if it does not.

Stage two, describe it and let ChatGPT draft

The build starts with the Create button and the Create tab. AI Central's instruction is direct: in the prompt, write about the GPT you want to create, and the AI will create the GPT for you. The same tab generates the name and the profile picture, and it accepts files you want the GPT trained on.

This is the part that surprises people expecting a settings form. It is a conversation. You say what the assistant is for, ChatGPT proposes a build, you correct it in ordinary language and it revises.

Because AI Central flags that files can go in at this stage too, the fastest genuinely useful build is usually the shortest one. Describe the job. Upload the two documents you always end up referencing. Stop.

Stage three, the Configure tab is where control lives

Create is fast. Configure is precise, and AI Central lists six things it governs.

  • The GPT name.
  • The GPT description.
  • The instructions that shape its outputs.
  • The knowledge files the GPT can draw on.
  • The AI capabilities the GPT is allowed to use.
  • Actions, which retrieve information or take action outside of ChatGPT.

Five of those six are settings. The sixth is a different species. AI Central's wording for actions, retrieving information or taking action outside of ChatGPT, marks the line between an assistant that talks and one that does. The other five settings all live inside the chat window. Actions reach past it.

The order of operations worth adopting: use Create to get a working first draft, then move to Configure and rewrite the instructions by hand. Generated instructions are almost always reasonable and almost never specific. The phrasing you want changed, the format you always want returned, the thing it must never do, those go in manually.

Stage four, preview is the step people skip

AI Central gives the Preview tab a stage of its own, and the reason sits in the wording.

This is where you can test your GPT. Try with some prompts and see how your GPT works. Train your GPT more on the Create tab to get better outputs.

Notice the loop AI Central is describing. Preview is not a final inspection before shipping. It is a return leg. You test, you catch the answer that came back too long or in the wrong voice, and you go back to Create and keep training.

Builders who treat Preview as a formality end up publishing assistants that perform beautifully on the single question they happened to try, and unevenly on everything else.

Stage five, publish and decide who gets in

Publishing is three moves in AI Central's account. Click the Create button. Set the access level however you want it. Then use the GPT link to reach the assistant whenever you need it.

The access setting deserves more thought than it usually gets. A published GPT carries the knowledge files you gave it, so the sharing decision is also a disclosure decision. Anything uploaded as knowledge should be material you are comfortable seeing reflected in answers by whoever holds that link.

What to do with this

AI Central closes on an instruction rather than a recap. Do not wait for inspiration. Try the tools, polish the output, get your best content. Three suggestions on how to act on that, depending on where you are starting.

  • Never built one: take the task you repeated most this week, describe it in the Create tab, upload nothing, publish it privately. A GPT with sharp instructions and no files still beats pasting setup text every morning.
  • Already have a few: go back into Configure and cut. Most underperforming custom GPTs are underperforming because their instructions are trying to cover four jobs at once.
  • Building for a team: put your time into knowledge files and access settings, not the name. The files are what make the assistant genuinely yours, and access is what keeps it that way.

AI Central's own framing is the one to keep hold of. A GPT is a tool, and the instructions are what guide the engine. The build takes minutes. The instructions are the work.

Do I need to know how to code to build a custom GPT?

No. AI Central's walkthrough never leaves the ChatGPT interface. You describe the assistant you want in the Create tab in ordinary language, ChatGPT builds it for you, and you adjust the result in the Configure tab. The only genuinely technical piece is optional: actions, which let a GPT retrieve information or take action outside of ChatGPT.

What is the difference between the Create tab and the Configure tab?

Create is conversational, Configure is manual. In Create you describe what you want and ChatGPT assembles the GPT, including the name and profile picture. In Configure you edit the pieces directly: name, description, instructions, knowledge files, capabilities and actions. AI Central treats them as two stages of one build, not as alternatives.

Can I upload my own files so the GPT knows my material?

Yes. AI Central notes that files can be added during the Create stage to train the GPT, and knowledge files also appear in the Configure tab as one of the six things you can modify. That is the mechanism that turns a generic assistant into one that answers from your material rather than from the open internet.

How do I get my custom GPT to give better answers?

Test it in Preview. AI Central's instruction is to try some prompts, watch how the GPT responds, then go back to the Create tab and train it further. That loop between Preview and Create is where output quality is actually won, not in the first build.

How do I share a custom GPT once it is finished?

Click Create to publish, modify the access as you want, and use the GPT link. AI Central notes that the link is how you reach the GPT whenever you want, which also makes it the thing you hand to anyone else who should have access.
